Temperance Brennan博士(Emily Deschanel)是一位极其高明的法医人类学家，她供职于华盛顿特区的Jeffersonian学院，闲暇之余写写小说作为副业。当尸体因烧毁或深度腐烂等因素无法识别，CSI们也束手无策之时，法院只能求助于Brennan那从遗骨中觅出蛛丝马迹的非凡本领。大部分的警探对于Brennan那过人的机敏，寻根究底的干劲以及她对参与调查的爱好都大感头疼，只有FBI凶案调查组的特工Seeley Booth(David Boreanaz)是个例外。作为一名前狙击手，Booth完全不相信科学以及科学家们，总是称呼他们为“斜眼”(当然随着他对于合作者们的了解，这一外号都是日渐被忘却了)。然而，他自己也无法否认，他对人的洞察力再加上Brennan的科学敏锐性，使他们成为了一对无可匹敌的搭档。除了Booth之外，Brennan相处时最感自在的，要算Jeffersonian法医鉴定实验室里她那群同样才华出众的同事了。Angela Montenegro(Michaela Conlin)，Brennan最亲密的好友，是一名擅长于重建面部构造以及罪案场景的艺术家；新进法医人类学者Zack Addy博士(Eric Millegan)是个神童，与Brennan一样不擅社交；对阴谋论情有独钟的Jack Hodgins博士(TJ Thyne)是昆虫、孢子以及矿物的专家；还有Camille(Cam)Saroyan博士(Tamara Taylor)，这位富于街头智慧的法医官，必须设法让所有这些天才们服从于她的管理。^[2]
