地下茎（竹鞭）无通气道，或偶可有少数通气道。竿的节内一般长约3毫米。箨tuò鞘通常有斑点或只在小笋中可无斑点；箨片披针形，线形或带状，外翻，平直或皱曲，在笋的上部散开，偶可不散开而呈笔头状，箨片基部狭于箨舌。花枝穗状；佛焰苞之缩小叶呈小形叶片状；小穗长约2.5-3.5厘米，稀可较短[如紫竹P. nigra (Lodd.) Munro]；外稃fū长约1.5-2.5厘米（紫竹可能较短）；花药长7-15毫米；花柱长在10毫米以上。

模式种：桂竹Phyllostachys bambusoides Sieb. et Zucc.

计40种，分布与属相同。
