库萨克出生于南非的德班，纳塔尔。他的母亲，爱丽丝·薇奥莱特（Alice Violet，娘家姓Cole），是一位英国伦敦人的女演员和合唱团女郎，他的父亲，詹姆斯·沃尔特·库萨克（James Walter Cusack），是南非纳塔尔殖民地的爱尔兰骑警。他的父母在他年幼时分居，他的母亲带他去了英格兰，然后去了爱尔兰。后来库萨克的母亲和她的伴侣Brefni O'Rorke，加入了奥布赖恩和爱尔兰演员团。

在晚年，库萨克成为爱尔兰保守派的活动家，特别是在他反对堕胎的立场上，他成为了主要的自由派爱尔兰报纸《爱尔兰时报》的常客。关于他的天主教信仰，他评论说：“宗教促使人内心的不满，使人试图使自己成为一个更好的人，使自己更接近上帝。”

个人生活

库萨克结过两次婚：1945年4月5日，他与女演员玛丽·玛格丽特·“莫琳”·基利（Mary Margaret "Maureen" Kiely，1920-1977）结婚。他们的孩子包括：保罗（1946年），在RTE担任制片人；Sinéad（1948年），女演员；Sorcha（1949年），女演员；Niamh（1959年），女演员；Pádraig（1962年），在伦敦国家剧院担任副制片人。他与玛丽·罗斯·坎宁安（Mary Rose Cunningham，1979-1993）结婚。
