1985年9月-1987年7月曾就读四川大学基础数学研究生班，学习拓扑学。1987年8月来中国海洋大学任教，1998年始被破格聘为数学系教授，至今已有30年多年的教学经历。曾任青岛海洋大学数学系副主任，中国海洋大学数学科学学院副院长。在科学研究方面，他长期从事格上拓扑学的研究工作，主要研究兴趣是用多值推理、模糊集理论和范畴论方法来探索拓扑问题，曾在科学出版社出版著作1本、发表多项有国际影响的研究成果。现已指导硕士研究生计23人，其中有8人攻读博士学位。
此外，方进明教授现任核心杂志《模糊系统与数学》的编委，中国模糊数学与模糊系统委员会常务理事。美国《数学评论》评论员。杂志《Fuzzy Sets and Systems》,《Journal of Fuzzy Mathematics》, 《Information Sciences》, 《数学年刊》, 《数学进展》, 《数学研究与评论》, 《模糊系统与数学》等的审稿人。
主讲课程
多年来，方进明老师为本科生讲授的主要课程有：高等数学、线性代数、拓扑学、数理统计讲义等。为研究生开设的主要课程有：一般拓扑学、L-拓扑学、模糊数学基础、Frame与连续格、格值拓扑学的现代理论、Fuzzifying拓扑学和拓扑分子格理论等。
研究方向
长期从事点集拓扑，格上拓扑的研究工作。现在的研究兴趣是在多值逻辑环境下，研究拓扑问题，格值收敛理论和格值序理论。研究方向有如下：
01、多值逻辑与推理；
02、.格值收敛理论；
03、多值序理论；
04、格值拓扑学。
主要贡献
C．L．Chang在1968年发表的论文中定义了不分明集，进而定义了模糊拓扑空间，这类拓扑空间成为很多拓扑学工作者研究的热点。
1980年，刘应明院士中提出了模糊集之间的“拟重关系”，改进了模糊拓扑空间的邻域结构，提出了拟重邻域系，这一改进对模糊拓扑学的研究起到了重要作用。
1991年，应明生从多值逻辑的角度提出了建立在分明集基础上的Fuzzifying拓扑和Bifuzzy拓扑。
1995年，Hohle和Sostak介绍了一种基于模糊集开程度的拓扑结构I-fuzzy拓扑。
2004年以来，方进明等人将“拟重关系”应用在I-fuzzy拓扑空间中，利用多值逻辑对I-fuzzy拓扑空间进行研究，得到了很多重要结论。
另外，方进明教授提出了I-fuzzy拟重邻域系研究I-fuzzy拓扑空间中的Moore-Smith收敛性，给出它的应用，并获得了很多重要结论。
